My Close Encounter with James
I was asked by my good friend, George Jones to take part in the BBC Radio Ulster Christmas concert in Belfast in 2005 and I was excited. I had only performed in Belfast once in 1979, as the opening act for David Gates and Bread and being the grandson of one James McQullian from Ballymena, my Irish roots drew me back.
I found my way to the Ulster Hall and while searching for the dressing room I was eyeing up the other acts and wondering what they would be singing for the concert. One confident guy approached me and introduced himself, “Hi Gerard, I’m James”.
This was my first encounter with James Huish. “I’m singing here today just like you, isn’t it exciting!” This was a statement not a question. It struck me that this ebullient young man knew what he wanted in life and was happy within himself, a rare thing in the crazy life called “Show Business”.
James told me that he had an ongoing singing gig at a restaurant just around the corner from the Ulster hall and if I had some time during the lunch break, he’d love to have me come over to hear his set and maybe do one myself. Well that’s just what I did. I couldn’t resist James’ enthusiasm. He reminded me of a young Bobby Darin as he strutted confidently across the stage engaging the eyes of everyone in the audience. His stage presence was relaxed but alive with a personal joy so endearing, you didn’t want to take your eyes off him.
James ask me if I had any songs that would fit his style and I said if I didn’t I’d write him some! He is now recording three of my compositions and I can’t wait to hear the finished tracks.
Knowing how he puts his heart and soul in to every song he sings, I ‘m sure the finished product will be wonderful. Watch out world there’s a new kid in town and he’s going to make sure that he is heard! By the way remember the name, it’s
JAMES HUISH!!
